Local Attractions and the Surrounding Area

Whitton is a quiet hamlet overlooking Rothbury to the north, and the boundaries of the National Park to the south.  There is excellent walking from the doorstep.

Fishing, golf and shooting, can usually be arranged locally.  Horse riding is also available at a short distance and can be booked in advance, this is popular so please give adequate warning.

Rothbury is a pretty town and is an excellent centre from which to explore Northumberland, Hadrian's Wall and the Scottish Borders.

Rothbury in winter

In addition to a nine hole golf course, about to become eighteen holes, and newly laid tennis courts and bowling greens, there is a wide range of good quality shops that can meet all your holiday requirements. Several shops are open till late, and part of sunday. Bicycles can be hired. In Rothbury, and nearby, are a variety of cafés, country pubs & hotels, serving restaurant and bar meals.

There is not a petrol station in Rothbury, however, there is one at Thropton (5 miles) or the Fairmoor Jet Garage (24hrs with convenience store) in Morpeth (13 miles)  To get to Fairmoor, the easiest way is to come off the A1 at Morpeth and travel through the town, the garage is on the RHS just before you rejoin the A1 / A697.

Nearby Attractions

Here is the still relatively undiscovered and unspoilt ancient Kingdom of Northumbria. Whatever the weather, a fortnight would not exhaust its possibilities.

There are a wide variety of notable Homes and Gardens which are usually open to the public, whether under the auspices of the National Trust, English Heritage, or the Red Cross. Locally, we have Rothbury’s Cragside  (the former home of Lord Armstrong, the pioneer of many things scientific); and nearby are Alnwick Castle and Alnwick Gardens (the traditional Ducal home of Northumberland); Wallington Hall (the Trevelyan’s); and a host of famous castles which you will recognise from the television, film, or from our Island History.

Within a short drive are mile-upon-mile of sandy beaches and dunes. Nearby, lie Holy Island and the Farne Islands. and the popular coastal route between Warkworth and Holy Island offering many castles, small fishing villages offering local sea food (Craster is particularly famous for kippers and crab sandwiches).

To the north lies the romantic Border Country.

To the west is Kielder Reservoir and Forest with extensive outdoor facilities: mountain biking, walking and water sports.

To the south is Hadrian’s Wall and Tyneside, the latter the location for excellent shopping, Eldon Square in Newcastle and the Metro Centre in Gateshead).
