www.cottage-northumberland.co.uk Local Attractions and the Surrounding Area
Nearby Attractions Here is the still relatively undiscovered and unspoilt ancient Kingdom of Northumbria. Whatever the weather, a fortnight would not exhaust its possibilities. There are a wide variety of notable Homes and Gardens which are usually open to the public, whether under the auspices of the National Trust, English Heritage, or the Red Cross. Locally, we have Rothbury’s Cragside (the former home of Lord Armstrong, the pioneer of many things scientific); and nearby are Alnwick Castle and Alnwick Gardens (the traditional Ducal home of Northumberland); Wallington Hall (the Trevelyan’s); and a host of famous castles which you will recognise from the television, film, or from our Island History. Within a short drive are mile-upon-mile of sandy beaches and dunes. Nearby, lie Holy Island and the Farne Islands. and the popular coastal route between Warkworth and Holy Island offering many castles, small fishing villages offering local sea food (Craster is particularly famous for kippers and crab sandwiches). To the north lies the romantic Border Country. To the west is Kielder Reservoir and Forest with extensive outdoor facilities: mountain biking, walking and water sports. To the south is Hadrian’s Wall and Tyneside, the latter the location for excellent shopping, Eldon Square in Newcastle and the Metro Centre in Gateshead).
Should it rain, there are many museums, galleries, shops and indoor leisure centres which cater for all ages and interests. We can provide directions and many ideas should you need them. | |||||||||||||||
